Norm Charney graduated from McGill University, in Montreal in 1972. Mr. Charney moved to Dallas in 1978 and obtained his Certified Public Accounting degree the next year. In 1979, he joined Electronic Data Systems in Dallas where he managed over 400 systems programmers for a mini-computer division responsible to develop application software for manufacturers, retailers and distributors.
In 1981, Mr. Charney purchased Athletic Supply of Dallas (ASD), a company which supplied sporting goods to high schools, colleges and professional teams across north Texas. In 1984, the company developed a catalog operation. Over the next few years, the company produced licensed catalogs for the NFL NBA, NHL, MLB PGA and NCAA. In 1992, Sears outsourced their My Team sports catalog to ASD. In 1995, Sears began outsourcing their Craftsman Power Tool Catalog, Wishbook Toy Catalog and their Home Health Care Catalogs to ASD. Mr. Charney managed over 850 employees in the organization as CEO.
In 1996, he sold the sports mail catalog and outsourcing business to Genesis Direct, a catalog aggregator. Mr. Charney purchased the technology platform, call center and warehouse operations back from Genesis Direct, and formed ASD Systems on January 1, 1998 and began building an e-commerce outsourcing logistics company to service the business to consumer market. In 1999 ASD Systems raised money through a private round of financing, a venture capital round of financing and also on November 11, 1999 was successful in listing the Company on Nasdaq with a market capitalization of $170 million. In November 2000, Mr. Charney formed Vision Equity, LLC to consult for and invest in profitable companies and real estate. One of the clients retained him as CFO to manage over 100 financial and operational personnel. Mr Charney has funded numerous investments. In December 2006, Mr. Charney invested in a startup business called Stealth Monitoring Inc. This business offers installation, service and live video monitoring of security cameras for hundreds of clients and is building a dealer network nationwide who want Stealth to provide video monitoring services.
